“In the service of democracy, peace and development”

Our group has been working on an Aquaponics Project targeted for Namibia through our school, Worcester Polytechnic Institute. However, the project was established by the Hanns Seidel Foundation working from Namibia. The Hanns Seidel Foundation (HSF) originated in Germany in 1967 and is named after the Prime Minister of Bavaria. The foundation works “In the service of democracy, peace and development” on a global level by working in over 70 countries worldwide.

While working in these countries, each local organization must adapt and consider the needs of the local people. In Namibia, the Hanns Seidel Foundation has established clear goals:

  • To promote democracy and good governance by strengthening the capacities of civil society organisations, political parties, decision-makers and disadvantaged groups to encourage well informed civic and political involvement.

  • To support the rule of law and anti-corruption initiatives by encouraging accountability and transparency through research and public dialogues.

  • To encourage sustainable economic advancement by supporting socio-economic research and public policy analysis as well as through encouraging discourse.

  • To contribute to environmental sustainability and the usage of renewable energy through awareness raising on environmental protection and climate change adaptation and mitigation.

In order to achieve these clear objectives, the foundation partners with other non-profit organizations in the community and are always looking to create new relationships and partnerships. Some of these partners include, the Institute for Public Policy Research, Namibia Institute for Democracy, Economic Association of Namibia, Anti-Corruption Commission, Insight Magazine, Desert Research Foundation of Namibia, Otjikondo School Village Foundation, and Cultivating a Culture of Care.

As our project has adapted due to current travel restrictions and global safety precautions, our team will not be traveling to Namibia to work personally with the Hanns Seidel Foundation. We will instead be continuing our project remotely with the foundation to provide them with educational material and prototype designs as they build an Aquaponic system for the community.
